James Donnell Slater

Deacon James Donnell Slater, he was affectional known as “Seekie”, was born in Lee County Bishopville South Carolina to Luther Benjamin, Jr. & Willie Mae Slater on March 13th, 1964. James grew up in Bishopville, SC where he attended Lee County school district in Bishopville, SC. Upon graduating from Lee County high school, James furthered his education attending business school in pursuit of a business degree. James lived in various localities. He resided in New Jersey, North Carolina, North Charleston, South Carolina. Since 2019, Seekie has resided in Midwest City, OK. James was a skilled Forklift and Heavy Machine operator. His sense of confidence, willingness to be patient, and his organization skills made him sufficient as a dedicated team member. Seekie, throughout his life was well-mannered and responsible. Never one to make excuses for his actions. If ever in error, he’d be first to humbly apologize. He continued to visit his family Church throughout the years as, “Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church” in Bishopville, SC. Well known and loved by many, Seekie’s sense of style was always crisp and clean-cut. Always dapper from head to toe, for any and all occasions. James enjoyed fishing, playing basketball, and bicycle riding. He kept his muscles toned by shooting pool he was an excellent Pool Player. He was a sure-shot. James loved music and was never too shy to grab a mic at Karaoke. His quick wit made no room to complain. Seekie motivated others to never lose hope, he always encouraged everyone to keep the faith. James Loved his family intentionally. He was brave and vulnerable, yet communicative about boundaries, simultaneously. Seekie was sure to never to never let a day go by without speaking to his beloved mother, Willie Mae Cousar; his niece, Bridgett “Pumkin” Murchison, Pumkin would affectionately call James, “Harpo”; Seekie and his Uncle Rick Benjamin by virtue that James & Uncle Rick are closer in age, they communicated like brothers. Surely Seekie was selfless in his love. Always demonstrating to those he cared about. He gave freely. James worked in the Textile Industry for many years with Pepperell Mills Manufacturing Company in Lumberton, NC. Other places of employment were, Low Country Hope Center and Breadbasket in North Charleston, SC. James was an active member of his Church (Divine Wisdom Worship Center), he was an amazing leader because of his “Servant’s Heart”. Serving others was his passion. James was appointed and assigned position in Hospitality and Help Ministries. He loved serving the Lord and filling the needs at his Church (DWWC). James also became an ordained Deacon. Always faithful and dependable. James worked whole-heartedly within the Church. Often, he would show up throughout the week to see what needed to be done. Throughout his life, Seekie’s resiliency allowed him to rise above any adversity. In 2015 James had an encounter with God. His life was changed and afterwards, he was never the same. This was not just a one-time dramatic experience; it was on going as James allowed and welcomed the leading of the Holy Spirit. As he continued his volunteer work at Low County Hope Center and Breadbasket at Cathedral of Praise Church, North Charleston, SC; Serving the people of his community, he worked and waited. He petitioned the Lord for a wife and the Lord answered his prayers. Approximately one year after meeting, James Donnell Slater united in holy matrimony with Alandres L. Williams in 2019. Although he told her from the 1st day he met her, God showed him that she was to be his wife. His persistence and consistency confirmed for her that it was safe to love again. Their marriage became their ministry. It was a Godly love story. James adored his wife, and she adored him. Their union was a spiritual unification designed to God. As James Slater would say, “He saved the best for last”!! Together every day until his last breath. James akin to Gideon (Old Testament). He was called by God to do divine work. He was faithful, a mighty warrior, a strong Leader of men. James endured, persevered, he stood on and declared the promises of God for his life, as with the inscription, “In His Wedding Band”. Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthen me. Those who preceded James in death: father, Luther Benjamin, Jr.; grandmother, Louise Benjamin; grandfather, Luther Benjamin, Sr; aunts, Joyce Benjamin, Colestine Benjamin-McLam, and Gina Mitchell. Deacon James Donnell Slater, “Seekie” leaves behind to cherish his to cherish his warm memories: his loving, faithful wife Alandres, of the home. Five bonus children: Andrew (Amanda) Burrnell of Summerville, SC; Ashli (Timothy) Wise, Columbia, SC; Aaron Green, North Charleston, SC.; Ryan (Ericka) Green, Batesburg, SC; Aubrey (Jade) Green, Prattville, AL and Ten Grandchildren. Also left to cherish Jame’s memories are his beloved mother, Willie Mae Cousar of Bishopville, SC; mother-in-law, Gloriadean Williams of North Charleston, SC; father-in-law, Larry Williams of Midwest City, OK; one sister, Louise & Lawrence Robinson of Sumpter, SC; sister-in-law Hermina Williams, of North Charleston, SC; brother-in-law, Orlando Williams of Winnsboro, SC; one niece, Bridgett (Stacey) Murchison of North Charleston, SC.; one nephew Keno Slater, Columbia, SC,: uncles Robert (Dorothy) Benjamin of Bishopville; SC; Albert (Jewel) Benjamin of Columbia, SC; David (Virlee); David (Virlee) Benjamin of Danville, VA.: aunts: Marie (Nathaniel) Mathis of Fayetteville, NC; Patricia Boykin of Raleigh, NC; Sarah (Alonzo) Livingston of Fayetteville, NC; a good friend, John Cousar; of Sharon Warren Couglin; Deacon James Williams.
